Spanish Food

There are typical food in different regions of Spain.
In the south it's eaten more fresh food than in the north.

In the south in summer, It's tipical "Gazpacho". It's very refreshing, and if you want to cook it, you just need tomatoes, onions, pepper, cucumber and bread, with a bit of  oil, vinegar and salt.  All together put it in a whisk, and ready to eat!!!!.  You can drink it during all day, better serve it very cold.
Also in Andalucia it's very typical the 'tapas'.  Wherever you go, just for having your drink you will have a 'tapa'.
Do you know the  'tapas' origin?
The name is because when people went to a bar and drank something, a plate was put on the top of the glass to avoid flies to come into.
And so the barman taking profit of this started to put something into this plate.

In the coast the typical dish is paella.   When I was a child it was very usual to eat paella on every Sunday.
The origin of paella comes from the past.  People used to put the leftovers of the meat  (chicken or rabbit) or fish (squid, prawns, mussels, cuttlefish, clams), or vegetables (onion, garlic, pepper, green beans) with rice.  But it's very important to boil the rice with a nice broth.
And if you want to cook a splendid paella, you must add saffron.
Saffron grows in "La Mancha" and Aragon, exactly in my village, in Monreal del Campo in Teruel.  There the best saffron of the world is grown.
If you go to Monreal, you can visit the saffron's museum.  Also you can help to collect it in October
and so you will understand the needed effort to grow it and collect it.  This is the reason by which it's very expensive.

In the north you can find the best cooks in the world, and you can eat seafood and delicious fish (such as hake, sardine, turbot....).

  • Do you know the typical plates of the north?
  • Do you prefer the southern food or the typical northern food?
  • Do you like to eat "cocido" (a typical Spanish stew) in summer?
  • Do you think  Spanish  people actually eat healthy or it is just a myth?
  • What kind of desserts are typical Spanish?
  • Do you think in other countries people use to eat "turron" or nougat candy for Christmas, or "Torrijas" or French toast at Easter Week?
  • Could you name other typical dishes in other areas of Spain?

  1. "Do you think Spanish people actually eat healthy?" I´m not sure if you´re using "actually" correctly, it could be a false friend. ;-)
