Many people
think that in a kindergarten teachers only care children and they just play,
but in a classroom each activity and each game has an educational objective and
all of this contributes to the children’s development. Everything is carried
out through routines. Routines give kids confidence because they know what is
coming next.
Activities
go on in a little time because toddlers’ attention span is very short.
I am going
to speak about routines of our nursery school, specifically in the 2 to 3 year-old
toddlers’ class.
At 9 o’clock
it is the opening of the nursery school. Children leave their things in their
cubby holes and put the school smock on and we sing the welcoming song. Then
children have free play (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) or story telling (on Tuesday
and Thursday) till 9:30 when we sit down on a mat in the circle time. There we notice
who is absent, how the weather is or we just sing.
From 10
o’clock to 10:30 kids have a workshop (arts and crafts, kitchen, emotions,
recycling…) (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) or a psychomotor activity (on Tuesday
and Thursday). After they wash their hands
and go to the toilet, eat a snack and go to the outdoor playground to let
children loose their energy just running and jumping.
When we got
back to classroom at 11:30, children do maths activities (on Monday),
sing-along (on Tuesday), do art and crafts (on Wednesday) or do some library
activities (on Thursday) and play with music
and movement (on Friday). Kids go back
to go to the bathroom to wash their hands before having lunch from 12:15 to
13:15. After eating children brush their teeth, take their pillows and their
little blankets and get ready for a nap. To facilitate sleep, we do a few
minutes of relaxation with classical music.
During the
time that toddlers sleep, my co-workers and I eat and watch out for children.
When they
wake up at 14:40 they are having a wee and then they choose between free play or
quiet time until 15:15 beginning the circle time again. In the circle time, every
Monday we have story telling, every Tuesday, shadow play, every Wednesday,
puppet theatre, every Thursday, rhymes and every Friday, mime.
From 15:30
to 16:00 kids have an afternoon snack and play in the outdoor playground.
When we got
back to classroom, children can go to a room for messy, noisy play or to another
room for quieter play. Every room is divided in several corners (or
workstations) and children flow among them. The work stations provide many different
learning and development possibilities such as physical, mathematical,
personal, social, emotional and creative development, knowledge and
understanding of the world, communication, language or literacy.
At 16:20 it is
time of tidying up, going to the toilet and of preparation to go out. Children
put their clothes on and we sing a song of farewell.
Children
leave school at 17 o’clock and we are going to take a rest.
Well, that is all. I hope you like my description
of a day in our kindergarten.
