TRANSGENIC FOOD by Amilka, Eva and Marta

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

Are you able to guess which one of these pictures is a transgenic food?

Our modern way of living contributes to new pathologies. Many diseases in modern life such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, hypertension, and obesity are all the result of digestive disorders, and others as lactose intolerance and coeliac problems have their roots, cause or origin in the kind of food we eat and the way it is prepared or processed.
We are what we eat. Chemical products sprayed in farms, gases used for artificial ripening of fruits and preservatives used for canning and tinning are present in our daily diet, we eat a lot of chemicals.  In a low quantity nothing happens but in a prolonged intake, it would be probably harmful.

TRANSGENIC FOOD

What is a transgenic food?

It's a definition about the foods that have been genetically-modified (GMO). Genetically modified organisms are those whose genome has been altered by molecular and genetical engineering techniques and this modification can be inherited.

When the modification of DNA is produced by the incorporation into genome of a fragment of DNA to other species, these GMO are called “transgenics” if they are plants and animals or “recombinat” if they are microorganisms.

This subject has divided the world into two opposed ways of thinking, we are going to try to explain it in a few words.

SOME POSSIBLE BENEFITS OR ADVANTAGES:

1.- Food is more tempting and nutritive also it can have different colours , shapes, sizes...

2.- The plants grow and get a faster development because they have a higher disease resistance and cold tolerance.

3.- They do not need pesticides. Consumers do not want to eat food which has been treated with pesticides.

4.- Nutrition. It would be possible to create for example rice with additional vitamins  and minerals, and it could feed population in the third world.

5.-Vaccine. We can use the transgenic plants to give immunity against infectious diseases.
It is very difficult to bring vaccines to the third world and that they arrive to all people,  besides we must take into account the problem of maintenance, since the vaccines need refrigeration, and the problem to administration. The oral vaccines are easier to administer than the injectable ones.

SOME POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES:

Actually, we don't really know how it affects to the Earth, animals and humans, but we have to read between the lines about the supposed benefits.

1.- Modified Plants and animals can have unexpected and harmful genetic changes.

2.- Modified organisms can mixed with natural organisms and they can lead and even get to the extinction of the original ones.

3.-  Plants can be less resistant to some plagues and more susceptible to others.

4.- Suspicion behind some allergies is around transgenic food.  Some allergies are under transgenic food suspicion.

Are you for or against transgenic foods?
Take up a stance and share it!
