Grammar: The Passive Voice

THE PASSIVE VOICE

Structure: Subject + auxiliar verb to be + past participle

We must take into account: 

1. The CO in the active sentence is the subject in the passive sentence. 
2. The main verb is substituted by the verb to be in the same tense, and the main verb is the past participle. 
3. The subject in the main sentence is the CA in the passive. 
4. If we want to say who does the action we have to introduce it using "by".

SHOULD, MUST AND HAVE TO 

• Should  - We use should to give an advice
• Must and have to - We use must and have to for obligations

SHOULD

• Advice: If you feel bad, you should go to the doctor. 
• Obligation (in a polite way): Anyone who wants to enter the concert should show his ticket. 

Should in present: You should tidy your bedroom. 

Should in past: She should have finished her composition yesterday. 

Should in future: Tomorrow you should call your grandfather, it's his birthday. 

Should in negative: You shouldn't smoke. 

Should in interrogative: Should we wear an umbrella?

MUST AND HAVE TO .- Diferences between must and have to 

• Must: Obligation imposed by the speaker. 
• Have to: Obligation imposed by an external agent or Strong personal obligation imposed by the speaker. 

MUST: It is always followed by an infinitive verb without to. 

• We must wait
• You mustn't smoke
• Why must we be quiet?

HAVE TO: it is always followed by an infinitive verb with to. 

• I have to study Maths. 
• We don't have to go.
• Why doesn't he have to wear uniform?

Intermediate Reading: Famous (cheating) moments in sport

Famous (cheating) moments in sport

1. Football

Argentina were playing England in the quarter - finals of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. In the 52nd minute the Argentinian captain, Diego Maradona, scored a goal. The English players protested but the referee gave the goal. TV cameras showed that Maradona had scored the goal with his hand! Maradona said the next day, "It was partly the hand of Maradona, and partly the hand of God"

Later in the game Maradona scored another goal and Argentina won 2-1. They went on to win the World Cup. 

2. Athletics

Fred Lorz, from New York, won the marathon at the St Lous Olympic Games in 1904. He finished the race in three hours 13 minutes. 

After rhe race Fred was waiting to get his medal land the spectators were cheering him loudly. Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of the US President, was in the crowd, ans some journalists took a photo of Fred with her. But then suddenly somebody started shouting "cheat" and soon everybody was shouting the same thing. It was true. Fred had travelled 18 of the 42 kilometres in a friend's car!
Fred didn't win the gold medal and he was banned from athletics. 

3. Fencing

Boris Onischenko, an army officer from the Soviet Union, was competing against Jim Foz from Britain in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Boris was winning and the electronic scoreboard was showing "hit" after "hit" for him. Jim Fox protested to the referee. Fox said that Boris was scoring points without hitting him. Olympic officials examined Boris's sword  and they made a shocking discovery. Boris had changed the electronic part of his sword. He could turn on the "hit" light on the scoreboard even when he hadn't hit Fox. Boris went home in disgrace, the next day, the British newspapers called him "Dishonischenko"
